David Douglas was a world famous 19th century botanist who made three plant hunting trips to North America and introduced Sitka Spruce, Sugar Pine, Western White Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Monterey Pine, Grand Fir, Noble Fir and several other conifers that transformed the British landscape and timber industry.

Over eighty species of plant and animal have ‘douglasii’ in their scientific names.

He is best known for identifying a conifer on an 1825 expedition in Canada - one of the timbers Carpenter Oak use for many of our projects - Douglas fir.
