Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard, lived from 1759 to 1796 and was born in a simple cottage in the village of Alloway.

In 2006, Simpson & Brown Architects were chosen by the National Trust for Scotland to redevelop the existing Robert Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway, with the museum forming the central part in the master plan to celebrate the poet's life and legacy, designed to link his birthplace with artefacts and different sites in Alloway linking together the story of Burns' life, including Burns’ Cottage, Burns’ Monument, the Brig o’Doon and the Auld Kirk.
