Douglas fir and steel frame explores contemporary design

The creation of this contemporary, easy to maintain, sustainable retirement home was project managed by Alec and Stephanie Wilson who are not adverse to a self-build project. Having previously completed an oak framed home in a traditional style they were excited to explore a contemporary Douglas fir design.

James Lock of Roderick James Architects worked with Carpenter Oak‘s frame designer Paul Slemmings to design a contemporary structure that mimics the shape of agricultural buildings. The exposed Douglas fir beams are made from eight solid band sawn pieces jointed with a stainless steel pins. Stainless steel rigging is used to replace traditional bracing for a more modern feel.
