Colin and Amanda Sheppard were looking for a plot in one of the most sought after regions in the country, between southern Oxfordshire and across the Cotswolds and the Chilterns to Salisbury. Their luck was in, when a site became available that included a fire-ravaged 16th-century thatched cottage.
It had views of open fields on three sides and was sheltered by woodland at the back. Knowing the scarcity of such a plot, the couple made and had their offer accepted on the same day and set about designing their new home.
