West Sussex Expansive Home

This West Sussex home, designed by Roderick James Architects, was an extensive project that included several phases to raise an oak framed two storey home, swimming pool, garage and barn.

We erected the frames during four visits to the West Sussex site in 2007.  The first phase comprised the main two storey section of the house with the kitchen and dining room downstairs and bedrooms upstairs.  The kitchen extends into a glazed roofed lean-to conservatory between the two single-storey barn rooms, one being the living room and the other the family room.

Both barn rooms have full height glazing and exposed green oak rafters with large fireplaces at the gable ends.  The central trusses on these barn rooms create a vaulted feel to the rooms with curved tie beams and curved principal rafters supporting the purlins.

The extent of the glass both in the barn rooms and the lean-to kitchen roof provide an uninterrupted view of the surrounding countryside to the south-west and filling the ground floor with natural light from morning to evening.
